The Chicago Bears announced several roster moves on Tuesday, two making a pair of previously reported moves official and another announced that they were parting ways with two others in Dominique Hampton and Gabriel Plascencia.
The Bears are on break for the summer.
However, the work clearly does not stop for general manager Ryan Poles as he and head coach Ben Johnson build out the team.
Bears Waive Dominique Hampton, Gabriel Plascencia Amid Roster Moves
Dominique Hampton, Gabriel Plascencia Out as Bears Add 2 Players to Roster
The Bears posted on X on June 16 that they “made the following transactions,” announcing that they “signed WR Kaden Davis and LB Tony Fields II” and “waived LB Dominique Hampton and K Gabriel Plascencia.”
Hampton, a fifth-round pick of the Washington Commanders in 2024, joined the Bears last season amid a rash of injuries at linebacker.
His departure this time stands out amid more questions and injuries at the position, with a slew of absences highlighting the offseason program, hence Fields’ signing.
Davis’ addition did not cost anyone at his position their spot on the roster, while Plascencia’s departure is not wholly surprising. The Bears still roster and have faith in veteran Cairo Santos, one of the longest-tenured members of the team.
Plascencia–aka the “Hefty Lefty”–has powerful leg but struggled with accuracy this spring.
Bears Taking Advantage of Summer Break
The Bears will not reconvene for training camp until sometime in mid-to-late July, leaving plenty of time for more changes to the roster to take place.
It seems unlikely, though not impossible, that they will make any significant moves during this stretch, barring a change in situations elsewhere or an injury to someone on the roster. The Bears still face significant questions at defensive end and left tackle but have in-house options.
The Bears also have other situations to monitor when they do reconvene.
Kyler Gordon’s participation in training camp will be key after he did not participate during the media viewing portions for most of the offseason program.
Beyond that, Austin Booker has the current lead over Dayo Odeyingbo opposite Pro Bowler Montez Sweat. Booker is a better pass rusher, but Odeyingbo–who is returning from a torn Achilles that ended his 2025 season–is better-suited to hold up against the run.
First-round pick Dillon Thieneman was still trying to crack the starting lineup before the break.
All of that and more will be significant topics of discussion for the Bears in training camp, along with whatever other roster moves they do make between now and then.
