Bears ‘Expected to Sign’ Former Lions Starting Pass Rusher: Report

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are finally adding a pass rusher in Marcus Davenport.

Davenport’s name first surfaced in connection to the Bears just yesterday, amid his multiple ties to the team.

A former first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, Davenport was there with Bears head coach Ben Johnson. He was also with the New Orleans Saints, who drafted him 14th overall in 2018, with Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

Report: Bears Adding EDGE Marcus Davenport

Marcus Davenport Joining Bears

“The #Bears are expected to sign veteran defensive lineman Marcus Davenport, sources tell @CBSSports,” CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported on X on August 17, adding “Former first-round pick with 43 career starts, 165 career tackles and 25 career sacks. Was a starter for the Lions last year.”

The Bears recently got Montez Sweat back at training camp practice, and have seen Austin Booker and Dayo Odeyingbo hold up. However, they were thin behind that group, particularly with 2025 second-round pick Shemar Turner still on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Daniel Hardy and Jamree Kromah appeared on track to claim the top backup spots, particularly with Turner sidelined.

Davenport will look to make his case, assuming the deal is finalized.

The Bears’ pass rush was poor last season. They revamped their secondary this offseason in hopes of offsetting that after investing heavily in their line. However, injuries have thinned that group, too. Davenport arrives with plenty of talent, but also an extensive injury history of his own.

He has played in 14 games over the past three seasons, which includes a stint with the Minnesota Vikings.
