Chicago Bears Stack Wins After Sticking to Script at Quarterback

Tyson Bagent, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears hosted the New York Jets in Week 4, and they emerged victorious, following a week of speculation around who would start at quarterback between Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent in Caleb Williams’ second straight absence.

The answer was both, with Johnson rolling with Keenum under center and Bagent split out wide for the opening play.

It was all Bagent after that, though.

His final line looks fine enough, with 268 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. However, the fourth-year former undrafted free agent had a mixed day. He completed passes at a high clip, but also getting away with some throws that were either ill-advised or poorly executed.

That was the case on his interception, and he should have had another but got bailed out by a defensive holding call against the Jets.

It was never going to look like Keenum against the Philadelphia Eagles for Bagent in Week 4.

Keenum entered that game with 66 starts in 80 games played at the NFL level. This was Bagent’s fifth NFL start, and his first since Week 10 of his rookie season. He was 2-2 with 776 yards, 3 TDs, and 5 INTs.

Without Keenum’s game as a backdrop, it was an unsurprising outing for Bagent. His mistakes came at inopportune times.

Even still, they were largely mitigated by a strong run game and the defense.

The Bears will take this and look to clean up their mistakes, including a fumble by D’Andre Swift that seemed to signal the end of his day. Swift was on the injury report during the week, so it is entirely possible that the Bears decided to give him a break, riding younger more physical RBs.

It was notable to see Roschon Johnson step in and get his first rushing attempts of the season in this game.

Johnson had logged one offensive snap in 2026 coming in, per Pro Football Reference.
