Former Bears Star Relives Gut-Wrenching Moment After Revelation

Soldier Field, Chicago Bears

One of the most painful recent memories for Chicago Bears fans is the now-infamous “double doink,” a fateful missed field goal try in the 2018 NFC Wild Card Playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles that cost the franchise an opportunity to advance to the Divisional Round.

It was the Bears’ first postseason appearance since the 2010 campaign. They have been back just once since. That was two years later, when they again lost in the Wild Card round.

For at least one player who was there, wide receiver Allen Robinson, the feeling of that miss still lingers.

Ex-Bears WR Allen Robinson Relives Double-Doink Amid Revelation

Allen Robinson Still ‘Pissed’ About Bears’ Missed FGA in 2018 Playoffs

Robinson spent four years with the organization, helping them reach the postseason in both of the aforementioned trips.  However, Robinson and the Bears’ fate was left up to the right foot of former Eagles kicker and 2014 Pro Bowler, Cody Parkey.

So, Robinson was naturally “pissed” off seeing San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro hit a 41-yarder in overtime against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5.

The kick put the 49ers up for good.

“Last night watching that kick hit the upright and go in, pissed me off [angry emoji],” Robinson said in a post on X on October 3, the day after the “Thursday Night Football” showdown.

Robinson was especially effective in the 2018 playoff game. He had 10 receptions for 143 yards and 1 touchdown. He posted a 6-55-0 line in the 2020 postseason trip. The Bears allowed Allen to leave in free agency following the 2021 season as the relationship deteriorated.

Notably, Robinson played for Bears head coach Ben Johnson on the Detroit Lions in 2024.

Former Eagles HC Doug Pederson Reveals Critical Intel

Robinson’s comments did not come in reaction to the kick from Pineiro, who was his teammate on the Bears in 2019. Instead, Robinson was reacting to comments from former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson about that game.

Specifically, Pederson reflected on one “interesting nugget of information” from one of his former staffers brought to his attention about Parkey.

It proved to be, arguably, the single most important bit of information for both teams.

“You know what’s interesting about that – and I can reveal it now – is during the week, my special teams coordinator, Dave Fipp, came to me. And I’ll always remember this, and Cody at the time was hitting 90-plus [%] – 92 [%], 93% of his field goals,” Pederson told Barstool Big Cat on “Pardon My Take” on October 3. “He was in the low 90s, I think, in field goal makes, right, that season. But anytime a coach burned a timeout, it literally cut in half.

“We’re getting to the end of [the game] – and Mitch Trubisky was looking brilliant. He’s like throwing darts out there on a two-minute drive. Gets him down into field goal range. And I’m going, there’s no way. I got one timeout left. This is going to come down to a kick. I’m going to test the theory. And literally, I’m replaying this whole thing in my head. And obviously, it’s history now, but bang the timeout, because I burned the timeout just before the snap. What do they do? They snap it. They hold it, and he drilled it. Mhm. But it was a timeout. I was like, ‘Oh, boy. Oh, boy.’ And it went ‘doink, doink.’”

Trubisky had 303 yards, 1 touchdown, and 0 interceptions on 60.4% completion in the game.

Parkey was in the low 90s in terms of his efficiency on extra points, but he was hovering just about 76% on his field goal tries during the regular season that year. He was at 91% on his FGAs in 2017, though, and Pederson’s intel paid off just the same.

Parkey, who did a tour discussing his experience after the season, played three more seasons, one each with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, and Tennessee Titans.

He has been out of the league since the end of the 2021 season.
