Bears News Roundup: Secondary Adjustments, Injury Updates & More

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears brought back a familiar face in KC Eziomume amid another busy day.

“The #Bears have signed DB KC Eziomume to the club’s Practice Squad,” the team announced in a post on X on October 19, making the news official after rumors surfaced.

Eziomume, 24, is an undrafted rookie out of Tulane. He rejoins a group that welcomed Kyler Gordon back at nickel and still has Jaylon Johnson and, when healthy, Tyrique Stevenson atop the depth chart on the perimeter.

Rookie Malik Muhammad has logged snaps inside and out this season.

The Bears also got trade pickup Clark Phillips involved in game action on defense for the first time in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Bears also signed Nick McCloud to the active roster from their practice squad last week, creating space on the practice squad that Eziomume fills. They also have former Arizona Cardinals draft pick Elijah Jones on their practice squad.

Bears Roster Updates Lead News Roundup on Short Week

Bears Get Good News on Jonah Jackson Amid Roster Update

Eziomume’s return was just one of the Bears’ announcements on the day. They also issued their first injury report of Week 7. It was just an estimation since they only held a walkthrough, but it had some noteworthy names listed (and unlisted, i.e., Caleb Williams).

The biggest lingering concern was the status of right guard Jonah Jackson, who exited Week 7 early with a hip injury. He also apparently has a quad injury.

Jackson was one of several non-participants on Monday, but there is some encouraging news.

“Bears OG Jonah Jackson has a hip flexor injury and is considered week-to-week, per source,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on X on October 19. “Status for TNF in doubt but shouldn’t be long term.”

It is important to remember the current track record of national reporting on the Bears’ injuries this season, but is something to hope for.

Jackson is admittedly a key for the Bears and their stellar offensive line.

Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) and T.J. Edwards (hamstring) both remained out, and the Bears listed Jack Sanborn as a DNP due to a concussion. That means he is in the protocol and will need to clear the five phases before he can return to action.

The bright side is that Stevenson and linebacker Keyshaun Elliott participating in full.

The Bears will hold another walkthrough on Tuesday before a day off on Wednesday.

That means another estimated practice report. Bears head coach Ben Johnson will address the media on Wednesday, which will be the best opportunity to get updates on the statuses of their injured players.

Patriots Announce Roster News Before Bears Game

Just like the Bears, the New England Patriots began the week with some roster shuffling and updates on the statuses on a litany of injured players ahead of their trip to Chicago to face the Bears on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 7.

“The New England Patriots announced today that they have placed WR Romeo Doubs on injured reserve and signed DB Elliott Davison to the 53-man roster from the practice squad,” the Patriots announced via their official team website on October 19, adding that they also “signed WR Ryan Miller, OL Jacob Rizy and G Andrew Rupcich (pronounced – RUP-sitch) to the practice squad and released CB D’Shawn Jamison from the practice squad.”

Whereas the Bears listed six players on their injury report, the Patriots had 17 players listed, including former Chicago team captain Kevin Byard III.

Byard was a full participant.

Still, the Patriots listed five players as non-participants including starting offensive linemen Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown. Starting cornerback Carlton Davis III was also listed as DNP on Tuesday.

Both teams are working on a short week, which only adds to the uncertainty around the statuses of the injured players on both sides.
