The Chicago Bears began reporting for training camp on Saturday, with quarterbacks and rookies showing up to Halas Hall. But head coach Ben Johnson’s group also got their first look at who would and would not be present for the start, including Kyler Gordon and T.J. Edwards.
They were two of the six players the Bears listed after placing them on one of the various injury lists with their first practice coming next week.
It set an ominous early tone.
Bears Announce Kyler Gordon, T.J. Edwards Among Roster Moves
Kyler Gordon, T.J. Edwards Part of Bears’ Roster Shuffle
The Bears announced via the team’s official website that Edwards and Gordon, as well as linebackers Keyshaun Elliott and Noah Sewell, defensive lineman Shemar Turner, and left tackle Ozzy Trapilo would all be heading to an injury list.
Edwards is going on the Active/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list.
“Players who suffer injuries outside of football or have a long-term illness are placed on the non-football injury/illness list,” ESPN’s Keith Jenkins wrote in September 2025. “Players who remain on the NFI list after the roster is set at 53 at the end of camp can be placed on the reserve/NFI list and will miss at least four games. They don’t count against the 53-man active roster limit.”
Edwards is coming off an injury-marred 2025 campaign, and he missed the early portion of the Bears’ offseason program.
However, he returned for mandatory minicamp and appeared to be a full participant. That could suggest that something occurred between the end of that and now that will have him limited.
Gordon and everyone else landed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
“Like players on IR, players are put on the active/physically unable to perform list (or PUP) at the start of training camp because of a football-related injury. The difference is these players count against the active roster limit,” Jenkins wrote. “Players on the PUP list can participate in all team activities except practice. They can be activated at any point during camp once they are medically cleared. A player can’t be placed on the PUP list after they have practiced or played in a preseason game.
“Players on the active/PUP list can be moved to the reserve/PUP list during the preseason roster cutdown period. Players won’t count against the active roster limit if they’re placed on the reserve/PUP list and they must miss the first four games of the season.”
Bears Kick Off Training Camp With Unfortunate Roster Shuffle
Notably, all of the Bears put on the PUP list landed on the “active” version, which bodes well for their return to the practice field sooner rather than later.
Nevertheless, it is an ominous way for Edwards, Gordon, and the Bears to begin. Gordon is also coming off an injury-marred 2025 season. Turner is will compete at defensive end rather than splitting time at tackle. He missed the offseason program. Elliott was absent after rookie minicamp.
Sewell and Trapilo are the only non-surprises, given the nature and timing of their injuries.
