Bears Coaches Corner: Message Clear Ahead of ‘Monday Night Football’

Communication is key, and the Chicago Bears coaching staff is getting their message across in no uncertain terms, including offensive line coach Dan Roushar.

Bears OL Coach Dan Roushar Sends Clear Message Before Eagles Game

Dan Roushar to Bears OL: Clean Up Penalties

Known for his straightforward delivery, Roushar was true to form in response to a question from Clocker Sports this week about the benefits of having the likes of Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright.

In addition to speaking on that, Roushar also addressed the Bears’ penalty woes from Week 2.

“It makes everybody’s job that much easier,” Roushar told Clocker Sports this week. “These guys know each other. Those three, certainly. Garrett [Bradbury]’s got a lot of experience, so he’s jumped right in and done his thing. So, it makes it a really comfortable setting, and they’re such a close group. We just got to eliminate the bad stuff. We got to eliminate that. And then, we’ll like the product better.”

Bradbury did not make excuses for his multiple miscues during the Bears’ 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2.

On the season, the Bears entered Week 3 ranked near the middle of the pack in a tie with the seventh-fewest penalties this season, per Football Database. However, their five offensive holding calls are tied for the third-most in the league entering Sunday.

Moreover, Bradbury is tied for the third-most penalties by a player.

The Bears set out to be the NFL’s highest-scoring offense this season. And while their 3-point showing in Week 2 may ultimately prove an aberration, their penalty issues loom large.

J.T. Barrett Talks Up Case Keenum

Much like Roushar, Bears quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett spoke with Clocker Sports about communication. Unlike our previous conversation with the young assistant, when Caleb Williams was the subject, it was Case Keenum, who will start in Week 3.

“Operationally, he has a lot of time on task of being the starter, doing everything that is necessary and required with that. So with that, yeah, there’s not any concern in anything to do operationally. If anything, it’s just getting him oiled up again,” Barrett told Clocker Sports ahead of practice this week.

“We saw that, again, from his operation. So, yeah, there’s no concerns.

As for the communication between him and Keenum, something Barrett previously acknowledged was smoother with Williams this season compared to last?

“It’s been really similar as we’ve gone through it. Just talking to the players, communication after different periods,” Barrett said of Keenum operating as QB1 during the week of practice. “Honestly, it’s been the exact same.”

That is a testament to the Bears coaching staff and, of course, Keenum.

It remains to be seen how all of the confidence in Keenum and his approach will translate to the field in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football.”
