Once again the NFL could take action following a hit on Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, this time against the New England Patriots on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 7.
During the second quarter, on a second-and-11 from the Bears 30-yard line, Williams dropped back to pass, finding Luther Burden III for 22 yards. However, the Bears were awarded 15 additional yards (and a fresh set of downs) on top of the play.
Officials flagged Patriots outside linebacker Gabe Jacas for roughing the passer.
The drive ended with a touchdown pass from Williams to wide receiver Luther Burden III. The score gave the Bears a 20-7 lead with the successful extra point try by kicker Cairo Santos.

Patriots’ Gabe Jacas Could Hear From NFL Over Hit on Bears Caleb Williams
For Jacas, the end of the game is unlikely to be the end of the story. Roughing the passer is one of several fineable infractions in the NFL. Per the NFL, a first-time infraction can incur fines as high as $17,911, while a second offense can garner a charge that reaches $23,882.
Fortunately for Jacas, this would be his first infraction.
The NFL regularly levies reduced fines for first-time infractions. That is if they decided upon any financial ramifications at all.
Williams was also roughed during the Bears’ Week 1 win against the Carolina Panthers. The NFL fined Panthers defensive lineman Derrick Brown the full amount for a first-time offense as a result of that infraction. He was also roughed in Week 6 by former Bears DT LeCale London, now of the Atlanta Falcons.
The NFL announces fines from the preceding week of games every Saturday.
