The Chicago Bears can exhale, even if only slightly, regarding wide receiver Luther Burden III.
Burden exited practice early on Thursday, and was sidelined for the duration of the Bears’ session on Saturday. He was clearly not set to be on the field on Sunday, but a new insider report essentially confirmed as much while providing critical context.
Burden will miss some time–which is unfortunate for the Bears, who have battled injuries at every position group this summer–but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Luther Burden III Dealing With ‘Groin Injury’
Burden was injured during a team period in Thursday’s practice, getting tangled up with teammate and Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. Both players stayed down for a bit, but Burden exited with training staff while Stevenson remained at practice.
Now, there is some clarity on Burden’s situation.
“#Bears WR Luther Burden III suffered a groin injury recently in practice and should miss a little bit of time, source says,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on X on August 9. “One to keep an eye on.”
Burden is coming off an injury-shortened rookie season. He is expected to at least co-headline the Bears’ wide receiver corps this year.
His status is certainly bears monitoring.
Bears WR Room Takes Hit
The Bears’ wide receiver room is not barren, but the group loses plenty of its appeal if Burden is forced to miss game time, which is still far from a concern at this point. Co-starter Rome Odunze was quarterback Caleb Williams’ favorite target to begin 2025 before a foot injury slowed him.
Behind their top duo, the Bears have veteran Kalif Raymond and youngsters Jahdae Walker and Zavion Thomas.
Several players, both youngsters and veterans, are also vying for roster spots.
However, a significant divide exists after Thomas to the next top options. As it stands, that appears to be Super Bowl champion Scotty Miller and veteran incumbent Maurice Alexander. The Bears notably traded DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills this offseason.
More clarity on Burden could come the next time Bears head coach Ben Johnson takes the podium for a media session.
