Caleb Williams Name-Dropped in Reaction to Bears’ Offseason Approach

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is heading into Year 2, and his outlook is encouraging as ever amid the team’s offseason changes.

NFL.com’s Gennaro Filice lauded the Bears’ approach.

“Caleb Williams is enjoying a fine 2025,” Filice wrote on May 2. “First, the Bears landed the hottest name of this head-coaching cycle in offensive guru Ben Johnson. Then Ryan Poles aggressively overhauled the interior offensive line via trade/free agency.”

Bears Upgraded Roster Around Caleb Williams

Brooks also cited the Bears’ 2025 NFL Draft class, and that is where the news gets even better for Williams. The Bears used five of their selections on offensive players.

Two of those players – Colston Loveland and Kyle Monangai – drew noteworthy labels.

Brooks called Loveland, the Bears’ top pick at No. 10 overall, his “favorite pick.” He admitted some of the logic behind the designation was confirmation bias. However, Brooks also pointed to the familiar comparisons between Loveland and Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta.

“It’s easy to envision Johnson deploying Loveland in a similar manner to how he utilized Sam LaPorta in Detroit,” Brooks wrote.

Monangai was the Bears’ final pick of the draft, taken No. 233 overall.

Brooks considered him the “sleeper” of the Bears’ draft class. The ex-scout also pointed to Kansas City Chiefs rusher guru as a reason to be encouraged about Monangai, citing the former as “gold” who “ran hard as hell.”

“I’m not going to say Monangai’s Isiah Pacheco,” Brooks wrote, “but I won’t immediately scoff if you’d like to.”

Bears Draft Drawing Rave Reviews

Brooks’ assessment of Williams and the Bears’ overall offseason effort aligns with what some rival front offices are saying following the draft.

That executive named second-round offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo as the Bears’ “sleeper.”

“I like what they have done, and I’ve been skeptical of the Bears in the past,” an exec said. “The tight end (Colston Loveland) is a really good player. The sleeper in the bunch is that (Ozzy) Trapilo kid in the second round. Eventually, I think he will be their right tackle,” an anonymous executive told The Athletic’s Mike Sando in comments published on May 2.

“I have to hand it to (GM Ryan) Poles. They have upgraded in a lot of ways this offseason.”

Sando referred to the Bears as “unofficial offseason champs” of multiple recent offseasons, a reminder of the lack of success such widespread changes can lead to.  The hope for Williams and the Bears is that three years of work culminate in success.
