Caleb Williams has proven that he is a unique talent, now the Chicago Bears quarterback must prove that he can elevate his team consistently to cement what could be a record-shattering contract extension.
In Williams’ second season, the Bears came within less than 100 yards of having their first 4,000-yard passer. He also led them to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
With so much already on the line, a potential extension serves as an additional incentive.
Bears’ Caleb Williams Expected to Test Waters in Contract Extension Talks
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio explored the landscape for Williams and several of his peers in the wake of the Kansas City Chiefs’ star QB Patrick Mahomes’ historic $504.7 million extension that he received this past week.
Williams, who has drawn frequent comparisons to Mahomes, could set a precedent of his own.
Florio noted that Williams’ current arc has him on a potential path to be “among the top four or five quarterbacks in football.” That will invariably affect the Bears’ bottom line.
“Williams has been very focused on the business realities of the NFL, from even before he was drafted,” Florio wrote on June 14. “When the time comes for Williams to get a new deal, the Mahomes number will drive the discussion.
“We’ve already heard talk of Williams having expectations that would be more than eye-popping. And we also expect that Williams will make it known that he wants his contract not after the 2026 postseason ends, but promptly upon the opening of the window for a new deal after the Bears face the Vikings in Week 18.”
Florio cited the injury risk in the playoffs in explaining the possible unprecedented move.
“No quarterback on his rookie deal has tried to do that,” Florio wrote, “even though the CBA wrinkle has been hiding in plain sight since 2011.”
Bears general manager Ryan Poles had been in the Chiefs’ front office for eight seasons before Mahomes was drafted. The executive knows the impact of having a true difference-maker at quarterback can have on an organization, and has expressed his belief that Williams is that.
The Bears have the fifth-year option on Williams contract and up to three years of franchise tags at their disposal.
Both sides will want to settle the situation for as long as possible, though, with those measures being fallbacks if talks stagnate for any reason.
Onus on Caleb Williams in 2026
Williams and Bears head coach Ben Johnson are both optimistic about their second season together. But the key duo has also not shied away from remarking on the potential improvements. The Bears need Williams to make the ones laid out for him to take another step.
For Williams, the simple answer is improving his efficiency. That could be as basic as “doing less,” as quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett has said.
However, Johnson has acknowledged that and the most complex aspects of the issue.
The Bears head coach noted that they wanted to drill their receivers on all facets of playing the position. It is part of an overhaul focus on fundamentals this offseason. Johnson noted how much emphasis was put on implementing the scheme last season.
This time, they have experience garnered last year under their belt. The Bears are admittedly further along at this point of the NFL calendar than they were in 2025.
Time will tell if that extends to Williams’ completion percentage and all that goes into it.
What is clear is that he is careening toward a landmark deal with the Bears. That is both in terms of the ultimate dollar amount and the implications that it will have for the franchise’s decision-making moving forward.
