The Chicago Bears are still looking to bolster their roster ahead of their first round of organized team activities (OTAs), which will begin on May 27, bringing in Sam Webb.
Chicago revamped its group on the back end, seeing Jaquan Brisker (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Kevin Byard III (New England Patriots) leave in free agency while signing Coby Bryant and drafting Dillon Thieneman to replace them. They should also be healthier at cornerback.
Just how Webb fits into all of that remains unclear at this point.
Bears Get Closer Look at Journeyman CB Sam Webb
Sam Webb Could Be Next Bears Roster Addition
“#Bears worked out veteran corner Sam Webb today, per a league source, recently worked out for #Giants,” KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson reported on X on May 20.
Webb, 28, went undrafted out of Missouri Western State in 2022.
As a rookie, he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, with whom he has had two separate stints (2022 and 2024). He has also spent time with the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans.
He has played in 36 games with five starts, tallying 45 total tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 1 recovery, which he returned for a touchdown.
Webb has proven that his skill set translates to the NFL level.
“Press corner with prototypical height, weight and length that should garner some attention from traits-hungry general managers. Webb played against a lower level of competition but had good ball production at that level,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote before the 2022 NFL Draft.
“Scheme fit will matter for him. He needs to transfer his physical coverage style over to his run support if he wants to stick around as a developmental press corner.
Webb would join an intriguing corner room for the Bears, if that is indeed where they play him.
Bears Have Deep CB Room
Injuries befell starters Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon and reserve Terell Smith last season. The Bears also lost Pro Bowler Nahshon Wright in free agency to the New York Jets this offseason. They still have former second-round pick Tyrique Stevenson and rookie fourth-rounder Malik Muhammad.
Webb has earned playing time on defense and has been a contributor on special teams throughout his career. That could help him earn a spot with the Bears.
Teams can roster up to 90 players until the end of the preseason, when the 53-player limit hits.
Webb still has a long way to go and an uphill battle ahead of him before that. That also means that he could get plenty of opportunities to show what he can do. It was during the offseason program last season when Wright emerged as a contender for a starting job. He parlayed that opportunity into a Pro Bowl appearance.
