The Chicago Bears positioned themselves to select Caleb Williams, securing the pick that became No. 1 overall in 2024, by trading out of the same slot one year prior. After two years, both Williams and the Bears have big business decisions to make.
While the Bears’ matter is tied to Williams on several levels, the QB also has another item on his docket.
Fittingly, the reason for both quandaries is the same.

Williams’ playmaking ability showed up in big ways often last season, and the now-third-year Bears quarterback is looking to cash in on his success.
He led numerous game-winning drives, including in the postseason, nearly getting the Bears to the NFC Championship Game. Along the way, Williams picked up a new nickname: “Iceman.” Williams has always been forward-thinking in terms of the breadth of his brand.
Now, he is looking to secure the rights to the moniker.
“The first two applications seek protection for the nickname ‘Iceman,’ a moniker that gained traction among fans in the 2025 season. These applications cover both the name ‘Iceman’ and a new logo,” Gerben Law’s Josh Gerben wrote on March 18. “The second two applications protect a silhouette of Williams mid-throw, inspired by a pivotal fourth-and-8 play during a playoff matchup in Green Bay last season. It was a moment that helped cement his reputation for late-game composure.
“By filing on an intent-to-use basis, Williams secures what’s known as a federal priority date, effectively staking his claim to the trademarks, before they are commercially launched.”
According to Gerben, this was a “critical” step to prevent misuse in the digital marketplace. However, the next steps can take “between 14 and 18 months.” The process includes showing actual use of the intellectual property on merchandise.
The filings showed plans for footballs, sunglasses, and digital trading cards.
Gerben also noted that Williams has been through this process before. He has applications for “CW” and “bear claw” logos, among other IPs, and is now up to “11 applications pending or in process.”
Bears Facing Reality Check About Caleb Williams
The Bears’ finances have been a major topic in recent weeks, particularly amid a free agency that was toned down in comparison to recent years, and with Williams’ eventual contract extension looming large.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Bears have roughly $213,000 in cap space as of March 18.
The Bears will need to create space for their incoming draft class and leave themselves wiggle room for emergencies. They will need to restructure player contracts on their roster or make additional cuts. The former option pushes dead money into future years, and the Bears must also plan beyond next season, particularly with Williams.
Both Williams and the Bears will have to be willing negotiators when the time comes. The team has Williams under contract for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. They also have his fifth-year option and up to three years of franchise tags at their disposal.
Situations rarely, if ever, reach that point with quarterbacks, though.
Williams will be paid handsomely if he continues his current trajectory, and the Bears’ QB is looking to ensure that means off the field just as much as it does on it.
