Bears S Jaquan Brisker Sounds Off on Missed NFL Honor

Jaquan Brisker recorded 17 tackles in the Chicago Bears’ Week 14 win over the Detroit Lions.

But he missed out on Defensive Player of the Week honors in the NFC, with the award going to Minnesota Vikings rookie Ivan Pace Jr., who had 13 tackles, one interception, and one pass defensed in a victory.

Jaquan Brisker Gets Honest About Missing Player of the Week Honors

Brisker did not intercept Lions quarterback Jared Goff. But he did force one fumble to go with a pair of deflections. He did not take kindly to missing out on the award.

In a conversation with Clocker Sports, he revealed just what winning the award would have meant to him, why he believes he didn’t get it, and just what he thought about Dallas Cowboys star – and former Penn State teammate – had to say about Justin Fields.

Jaquan Brisker Gets Candid About Being Overlooked

CS: I saw you react a little bit to not getting the Defensive Player of the Week. What would it have meant to you to get the award?

JB: Just that the league recognizes real talent and things like that. Just more so from the safety perspective that those tackles were more in the box and not more saving tackles and things like that. So I just think if [it was] another player, especially those players that they love [in air quotes], they would have for sure been on there. Just in my eyes.

CS: Do you think it has something to do with the team’s standing (5-9) right now in the league?

JB: Yeah, for sure. I think definitely with the team standing. But I mean, it doesn’t – actually I wouldn’t say that. But maybe because you win. But at the same time, I mean [it’s] Player of the Week. Player of the Week, you know what I mean? You go out there, you outperform a lot of players in the league – Like I said, if it was any other player, no matter what the record was, they would have gave it to them.

Jaquan Brisker Driven to ‘Go Harder’

CS: Do you feel like that adds fuel to your fire? You go 100% every week, but does it add more to the fire?

JB: Yeah, it definitely does. It definitely does. Just to make me go harder, and then also just make sure they know who I am, for sure. Because, for example, if that was TJ Watt, Micah Parsons – that’s my guy. Any of them top – Fred Warner – name all them players, Jamal Adam. Easy, no doubt.

CS: You said Micah Parsons is your guy, Micah has been very supportive of Justin. Have you guys talked about that at all? What are your thoughts about his support, saying Justin is probably the guy that should stay?

JB: I mean I talked to Micah here and there. But not about Justin. Obviously, we – me and Micah – played against Justin in college, and we seen the way Ohio State did things with him. And we seen the way he performed [in the NFL], things like that. So we know what type of player he is and know what he has in the tank. So I’m not surprised Micah had support for Justin.”
