Bears Balancing Making Changes With Consistency for Caleb Williams

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

Caleb Williams and Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus addressed the media on Wednesday. There was a solemnity to the session that underscores the reality of the Bears’ situation. They are 1-2 and could easily be 3-0 or 0-3. The latter was a distinct possibility given how their season-opening victory over the Tennessee Titans went.

Coming off back-to-back losses to the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts, and with their next opponent the Los Angeles Rams coming off a surprising Week 3 win, Eberflus is trying to present a consistent picture for his rookie QB.

Matt Eberflus: Bears Coaching Staff Has ‘Good Plan’ for Caleb Williams

“I think you got to adjust and move,” Eberflus told Clocker Sports during his presser on Wednesday.

“You got to adjust and change, meaning your offense needs to adjust and change. But the concepts need to stay the same in terms of dressing it up with formations and the way you’re moving your protection. I think that needs to adjust every single week with how you’re presenting to the defense. Have to do that. So it can’t just be that of a simple of an answer. So you got to be able to do that, and our offensive coaches are doing that and we got a good plan this week.”

Williams, for his part, is looking internally.

He noted his role in impacting the communication to help the offense and the line in particular operate more smoothly. He also said that his postgame breakdown with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was more in-depth than previous sessions.

We will see if their more intensive approach — along with a potentially revamped running game with Roschon Johnson getting more carries — pays off.

Daniel Hardy Excited to Face Matt Stafford, Rams

The Bears will host the Rams in what is their first home game since Week 1. For edge rusher Daniel Hardy, it’s an opportunity for bragging rights.

Hardy was a seventh-round draft pick by the Rams in 2021.

“[It’s] just a fantastic chance to compete. Same always. [They’re] a good team despite their record. But you know, I’m excited to go up against them and leave our guts out there,” Hardy told Clocker Sports on Wednesday.

“I still got some friends over there guys I trained within the offseason. But at the end of the day when we’re in the white lines, that’s still the other team, and we’re still going to compete and leave everything out there. But, yeah, definitely will be some bragging and some trash talk after the game.”

Hardy is in his second season with the Bears. He spent the 2023 season on the practice squad but made the 53-man roster in 2024 after a strong preseason. He blocked a punt in Week 1.

Hardy had plenty of good things to say about the city and his love for the team.

He also spoke about the talent on the Bears’ roster, that a guy like him has trouble earning regular playing time. In three games, Hardy has logged just one snap on defense while seeing 71 snaps on special teams, per Pro Football Reference.

It is a testament to the depth on that side of the ball. But perhaps Hardy can get in on defense for a chance at sacking Rams QB Matthew Stafford.

He has the utmost respect for the two-time Pro Bowler and one-time Super Bowl champion.

“[He’s] incredible, man. Generational. They talk about him having 20-yard handoffs just because he’ll put that thing on a line,” Hardy said. “Seen him make some incredible throws in my time there. Great leader, great person and I’m excited to compete against him.”

Tyler Scott on Giving Back

Second-year Bears wideout Tyler Scott visited with Hope Chicago as a featured guest for a Senior Assembly at Johnson College Prep in Chicago on September 24.

“It was a cool experience, and, honestly, made me kind of go back in time,” Scott told Clocker Sports on Wednesday. “Made me think what was my mindset, what was I thinking when I was sitting in their chairs?”

JCP is a four-year charter school and part of the Noble Network of Charter Schools.

“No. 1, I think it’s cool, like the whole foundation. The fact that they have all their college education paid for there, free to them. That’s a cool opportunity because I know me growing up at that stage, I’m like, ‘Listen, if I’m going to college, my only way was sports.’ I’m like, ‘I gotta get it. Do some type of sports or something.’ Because I couldn’t afford college,” Scott said.

“To be able to encourage them, talk about perseverance. And not just getting there, but to actually finish. And that’s something that my parents taught me growing up, was once you started something, you always finish it. So I was just passing that along like, “It’s great to get there, but you also you want to finish. You want to be able to walk across the stage and you’ll have that degree.” So it’s a cool opportunity.”

Scott spoke about the interest of the students and how much it would have meant to him to have someone in his position come speak to him as a youth.

He also spoke about it being a reprieve from the grind of the season.

“Super refreshing,” Scott said. “You feel good after doing something for somebody like that. It’s not just them that is getting something out of it, but it’s also you. I’d get in the car you know after doing that, talking for hours so and you know, I’m like, ‘Man, I feel good.’ It was refreshing to be able to see, to be able to represent the Bears. But not just on the football side, but also just in the community in just a bigger way than just on the football field and so it just feels good.”

“You give back to people. And to know that it means something for them, that they truly appreciate it’s just something that you feel great about.”
